Elise (she/her) is aware of the importance of establishing a trusting, respectful, empathic and genuine relationship with her clients before strategies for change can be adopted, no matter what theoretical approach is taken. A main aim in therapy is usually to assist the client to become empowered and assume responsibility for one’s life.
Elise has worked with adolescents, adults across the life span, couples and families. She has specialised in general practice over the decades in many areas including relationship issues; sexual problems, life transitions and adjustment; grief, loss and bereavement; chronic health issues (eg CFS/ME); accident/injury recovery; victims of crime; sexual abuse; adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse; PTSD and trauma; pre/post-natal issues inc IVF. As Dr Julien became more experienced, she developed her own style in therapy. She currently works from an eclectic viewpoint drawing from extensive training and
past clinical experience.
Her original training was in Behaviour Therapy, Biofeedback, Behaviour Modification and Sex Therapy. It was broadened to including Gestalt, Rogerian, Group Therapy, Bioenergetics, Transactional Analysis and Cognitive therapies. She also draws from Psychodynamic, Client-centred and Existential perspectives, Meditation, Mindfulness and Positive Psychology. Dr Julien also has a particular interest in Systems thinking and Family Therapy. We are all part of a system which can affect us through our perceptions, feelings, expectations, thoughts and real-life experiences. It can give important clues as to why we behave/react in a certain way.
Dr Julien has previously practised for many years in a Complementary Medicine Specialists Clinic alongside highly trained and experienced practitioners in integrative medicine, naturopathy, osteopathy, remedial massage, Chinese medicine and acupuncture. She is aware of how diet, lifestyle, physical health, and other factors may also impact on psychological health in our complex mind-body interactions. Dr Julien practises in a wholistic way, taking into account each client’s unique context. She is aware that there are many approaches to health and well-being.
